Droids in My Lunchbox

Walle_bentoWhile for large portions of the audience, lunch traditionally consists of sandwiches carried in brown paper bags, or items purchased from a nearby fast food establishment.

In other geopolitical regions, there are other lunchtime traditions, including the rather charming boxed lunches often called “bento.”  They sometimes include elaborately arranged foodstuffs that make them attractive to the senses of both vision and taste.

My favorite example is this adorable WALL-E bento, complete with companion Eva crafted from a quail’s egg.  Created by someone calling herself Anna the Red, it is quite a detailed piece of food artwork, as are her many other lunches.

Droids on Parade

AsimoHonda’s AISMO droid is certainly no stranger to public events, especially after taking a turn directing the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.  It seems that next year will not be very different, as a 49 foot tall replica of the droid will be appearing in the Rose Parade.  I would gather that it will be a model of AISMO made of rice, lettuce seed, and various other natural materials based on the parade’s entry requirements, instead of the droid itself.

I also gather that this requirement must not apply to humans, given that Master Thirteen himself appeared in this parade last year.

Holidays on Hoth

Falcon_sledFor all the skills that droids have, there are quite a few things we do not do as well.  For example, even if we do go “on holiday,” we are still assisting our masters, and not actually vacationing ourselves.  Also, in general, we do not engage in snow sports.  However, I know that both these activities are quite popular among humans on the planet, and for many parts of the northern hemisphere it is an ideal time for such sports.

There is good news for fans of both sledding and Corellian Engineering Corporation’s freighters.  Although members of the Rebellion will name this the Millennium Falcon, this sled could be a replica of almost any YT-1300 model freighter.

Happy Holidays

WoookieechrFor those of you who celebrate the holiday, please enjoy.  For those who don’t, please have a pleasant day as well.

‘Tis The Season

CookieeAs bakers and cookie connoisseurs everywhere are aware, this time of year is particularly well known for its proliferation of pastry products.

While the intersection of Wookiees and food preparation has been a topic before, Bonnie Burton of StarWars.com provides a timely recipe for Wookiee Cookies, from The Star Wars Cookbook: Wookiee Cookies and Other Galactic Recipes.

Whether you are baking for this festive season or not, you may want to consider these cookies in your recipe selection.

Holiday Pinups

Warbot_cal_002Oh, my.

While I normally do not understand the appeal of pin-up calendars, I must say that I may need to find a way to obtain this one from Foster-Miller, manufacturer of military and security droids.

GingerbreadhousesWhile we have seen gingerbread TIEs before, I have not previously seen similar creations with working circuitry.  However, at You Bent My Wookie, you may find these, and many other wonderful gingerbread projects.

Counting the Days

AdventWhile this project may be a little late for this year, it may come in useful for next year, or as a gift for this one.  Perhaps it will merely delight you enough that you must craft it to enjoy for the remainder of this festive season.

I am not entirely sure of the history or traditions behind the Advent Calendar, but any project involving counting is rather pleasing to me.

In any case, you will find the directions for this Star Wars Advent Calendar on the Official Star Wars blog.

One Gift Exchange I’ll Avoid

JawaholidayAs I understand, there seems to be an expected sense of understanding and community for this holiday season.  One should better tolerate one’s fellow being, in the spirit of the season.  I am programmed to try to follow all expected behaviors and integrate into society as well as possible.

You will have to forgive me if I still avoid the Jawa gift exchange.

Roomba’s Big Brother

CleaningdroidI’m sure everyone in the audience is aware of the Roomba, which vacuums floors with a minimum of human guidance.  It is a machine well-suited for home maintenance tasks and feline transport.  However, larger tasks, such as office building cleaning, are beyond its design and battery life.

For those of you who may have a office building in need of floor cleaning, there is a droid solution in the works.  Fuji Heavy Industries and Sumitomo have issued a press release bout this droid which not only cleans the floors, but which will use the building’s elevator system to access each floor, eliminating the need for redundant cleaning systems on each floor.
