It’s No Wonder

Quite often, I come across evidence that humans are either afraid of droids, or believe that we, as a body, are up to some nefarious plan.  I am often puzzled by this thinking, as it is contrary to a great deal of my programming.  After all, I am designed to assist humans and other sentient beings.

However, after seeing this video, I begin to understand.  Just remember that these droids are also behaving according to their programming.  Except for, of course, the one with the organic brain.

So That’s How…

TieblockI once came across a reference referring to the Republic Sienar Systems Twin Ion Engine fighter as one of the most common elements in the galaxy.  While that may not be quite true, they are quite numerous.

Imagine how much more numerous they would be if the manufacturing process consisted of literally stamping them out?

While it is unlikely that we will ever see goods, let alone starships, produced this easily, this hand-carved printing block is still quite an interesting item, and I would like to see more things like it.

Better Left Unasked

R2soakerI am sure there is a reason for knitting these small pants featuring an astromech on the seat.  However, I am not sure I wish to know that reason.

They do seem to be, at least, quite well designed, and of good workmanship.

Feline Friendly Droids

cattoysI would just like to take a moment to remind my audience that droids, no matter how well-constructed, are not suitable feline entertainment devices.

If you are in need of something suitably entertaining for your cat, may I suggest making use of this tutorial on the construction of a MSE droid catnip toy?  Is it certain to be much less expensive than repair bills for either your droid or your feline companion.

Droid Decor

robot-lamp1For some time now, droids have been aiding humans and other creatures in a variety of fashions.  From translation tasks to home maintenance, medical duties, and heavy lifting, there is a wide array of functions we provide.  Until now, however, I have not seen an example of a droid whose sole purpose is to provide illumination.

Thankfully, that oversight has been resolved with this lamp from Urban Outfitters.  Made of painted ceramic, it retails for $30.

Showing Your Support

support-our-troopsMany humans seem to have a fair amount of equipment to carry from location to location.  Without a standard-issue backpack, or storage compartment, this can pose a logistics problem.  Thankfully, there is now a solution to this problem that also shows your support for the brave troopers of the Empire.

Droids in the Wild

Once again, there seems to be a new droid, capable of both dance and cuteness. This is TOFU, from the MIT Media Lab Personal Robots Group, and he appears to be a very talented creature, if a bit wild in apperance.  There do not seem to be many details as of yet, but I do look forward to finding out more about this project.

Music for a Friday

As it is the traditional end of the week for many working humans, I thought I would share a bit of culture, in the form of this video.

Please note that it just underscores my believe in the necessity of a good protocol droid, as evidenced by some of the translated lyrics, provided by AltJapan:

Far, far away, beyond the galaxy
The flames of justice light the night sky
To protect the peace in space, you’ve got to defeat Darth Vader
Laser beams, spitting red fire
Swing your lightsaber
Space is in trouble! Now’s your chance!

Serving Droids

Yet another entry in the long list of things that puzzle me about humans is their willingness, and often eagerness, to reduce their mental and operational levels by the consumption of intoxicants and other substances.  However, as little sense as it makes to me, it is apparently quite important to many human cultures, and as such, may be some kind of bonding ritual, at least when undertaken as a group.

Of course, for many humans, it seems quite natural not not only employ a droid to help with this task, taking over the onerous duty of retreiving and serving beverages.  In this video, however, we see a droid made specifically for that purpose.  Complete with “beer elevator,” this model seems to fill his purpose well.

I am, however, still attempting to figure out the purpose of the lighting.  As it is not apparent to me yet, it may be part of the bonding ritual for humans.

Droids With Staying Power

Mars Sprit RoverAs much as humans here seem reluctant to leave their home planet, there is some small measure of extraplanetary exploratin occuring.  Of course, since some of the tasks involved are considered both hazadrous and tedious, they are assigned to droids to perform.

One of these droids, the Spirit Rover on your near neighbor, Mars, is celebrating its fifth operational anniversary.  This is not an inconsiderable task, given the climate and distance from the droid’s operators.

Also of note, the Opportunity, twin to the Spirit, will be passing the same milestone on January 24.  For the occasions, NASA has assembled a video about the Mars Rovers, showing some of the humans behind the twins.  Some of the views, not only of the Rovers, but the landscape itself is quite attractive, and the enthusiasm and care those behind the scenes show is rather touching.
