Time Loves Droids

Love_robots_14With the opening of the movie WALL-E, droids, especially cute ones, seem to be a popular topic of discussion.  Not that I can find any fault with anyone who appreciates a hard-working, attractive droid.

I have just come across a photo essay from Time Magazine entitled We Love Robots.  I do believe I am most fond of this musical model pictured, but there are a great many adorable models shown.

An Imperial Mouse?

EmperormouseToday I have found another item that puzzles me.  I believe this ornament, depicting the  Emperor as a mouse, is supposed to be cute.  I am still not sure if that is a form of respect on this planet or a form of disdain.

The seller does offer several other ornaments, including a prominent Wookiee, a galactic senator, and a moisture farmer.

Wall-e-legoAs you may or may not be aware, the movie WALL-E will be opening next weekend.  While I am looking forward to it, provided Master Thirteen will allow me time to view it, there are plenty of related items to keep a droid amused in the meantime.

A prime example is this replica of the movie’s protagonist, built by Joe Meno, editor of BrickJournal, out of Lego bricks.  Not only is it a wonderful likeness, it is also capable of movement, and has posable arms.

You can see more views of this piece of brick artwork at Flickr.

It Starts at a Young Age, It Seems

The public’s love of R2–D2 is, to put it lightly, well established.  However, here we have proof of the astromech subverting children to the Rebel cause by, of all things, dancing.

Granted, this is not the actual astromech, but a replica at Maker Faire.  Still, associations made this young in life will last a long time.

Aren’t You a Little…

Chibitroopers

I do not seem to have the physical requirements for our Empire’s Stormtroopers in my databanks.  However, I feel it quite safe to say that these particular figures are rather on the small side.  Also, I find it strange that the two Clone Troopers are, well, not identical in size.

Still, I am strangely attracted to these figures, and believe they will find a place on my console. I would imagine that they do not complain so much about dish alignments, after all.

Aren’t You The Cutest Little…Bounty Hunter?

I must say, there are a great number of toys inspired by sights familiar to Master Thirteen and myself, brought to this planet by the Star Wars movies.  Most are of commercial mass-manufacture, of course.  Occasionally, though, one does find some adorable custom made items.

Here are a few examples.  I am slightly saddened that the Stormtrooper isn’t as adorable as Boba Fett or Lord Vader.  Of course, I’m still slightly confused by the idea of Lord Vader as cute, rather than inspiringly powerful.  But to each his own, I suppose.

A Terrible Pain in all the Diodes Down my Left Side

Humans here seem to like modifying themselves, in many seemingly strange ways.  It makes the aforementioned diodes just…well, ache.  I’m quite glad that I’m a droid, and therefore can be upgraded without resorting to extreme measures.

Master Thirteen has spoken on the issue of tattoos before.  However, one more has brought itself to my attention.  Personally, I prefer my tasteful Imperial Insignia.

Stormtrooper Mighty MuggsGood thing we have this trooper to protect us from the unsavory (albeit cute) characters in this toy series from Hasbro.  I’m not sure how they’re manufactured, but they are apparently “Made with 100% Recycled Awesome.”  This planet never ceases to amaze me.

I do wish, however, that it was not so obsessed with a certain protocol droid.  I think it would be a better idea to let people see our variety of models and functions.  Perhaps in the future.

I Wish I Were USB Compatible

Spare memory is never a bad thing, and what droid girl wouldn’t want to have one of these adorable little USB drives near her ports?  They even have little hoodies to keep them warm!  Not that I’d allow my little stormtrooper to catch a chill.

Keeping Warm

While it’s the cold season for the northern hemisphere of this planet, this quilt would also be handy for the freezing nights we get on Tatooine, as well.  Still, it would be even better if it were more Imperial, but a droid can’t be picky, I suppose.  Lord Vader, at least, makes an appearance.
